Mission Statement

The mission of Project Adult Literacy Society is "Changing Lives through Literacy". PALS is a community-based literacy program that addresses the learning needs of adults with low-level literacy skills. Literacy is having the skills to use printed materials in daily living. One in three adults in Edmonton have low-level reading and writing skills. Math literacy is using math in daily living. One in two adults in Edmonton have low-level math skills.

About This Cause

Project Adult Literacy Society is based in Edmonton, Alberta and is committed to changing lives of others through literacy. PALS provides services for adults who want to improve skills in reading, writing, speaking and math. Learners are matched with volunteer tutors one-to-one or in small groups and generally meet for two hours, once each week. Matches can meet days, evenings or weekends - the meeting schedule is flexible, based on the availability of both learner and tutor, and can accommodate work, school, child-care, vacation, and so on. Matches meet in neutral locations such as the PALS office or the Public Library. Services are available free of charge. PALS provides supplies, resource materials, and training. They should not be limited by financial barriers, time flexibility, and level of skill. - We meet the needs and build on the capacity of each individual. - Improved skills enable individuals to have more choices, make more informed decisions, have greater involvement in the community, and pursue lifelong learning. - Reading, writing, numeracy, language, and digital literacy have a direct impact on self-fulfillment. - Inclusion: All persons receive equal access to our services. - Race, gender, age, disability, country of origin, religion, colour, creed, or sexual orientation is not a factor in acceptance of learners or volunteers. - Our society is open to Canadian citizens, landed immigrants, refugee claimants, and people on work visas. - Respect: Our learners, staff, and volunteer mentors interact with respect - Our volunteers are mentors and leaders who are vital and crucial to the Society and receive on-going support. - Our staff are valued members of the organization. - Our learners bring a wealth of experience through diverse backgrounds, challenges and expectations.
