About This Cause

Since its inception, Metro Theatre has owned and operated a performing arts Theatre on the ancestral, unceded territory of the Squamish Nation in the Marpole area of Vancouver with a mandate to serve the “non-professional” sector of the theatre arts. In 1964, the Society renovated a 1930’s vintage Movie theatre into a 400 seat proscenium theatre complete with all the modern technology of the period. Today, after a few modern updates, Metro Theatre is an up to date, 310 seat presentation venue that has not only presented 61 continuous seasons (although disrupted by Covid) of accessible theatre entertainment for Greater Vancouver audiences, it is also available to the wider community as a theatre facility for their own events from dance, to opera, from full musical theatre to school graduations. Metro is fortunate to be able to provide and staff, a comfortable theatre, licensed lounge, and concession for our patrons and a complex theatre infra-structure including rehearsal space, and a full shop for set building, props, and costumes, for productions. The theatre serves a wide patron base from Tsawwassen, and White Rock in the south to the North Shore and from Richmond to Maple Ridge and Langley. With an average attendance of 1000 – 1500 per production, Metro can expect to have over 6000 people attend its own performances and another 2500-3000 attending performances by local groups renting the theatre. Many of our 400 Season Subscribers have been loyal patrons for decades. Charitable organizations are offered special fund raising performances for their own benefit. To include the wider community, Metro has actively encouraged and offered special “relaxed performances” for those challenged by a more “formal” event and complimentary tickets to groups that would not normally have the opportunity to attend a live performance. Running from September through June each year, Metro’s 61 Seasons of 5 – 7 shows is a testament to the hundreds of amateurs that have been involved in more than 525 productions and over 8,000 performances in it’s history. “Amateur” in only the purest meaning of the word, “for the love of it”. There is nothing “amateur” about our commitment or the final result on stage. On average, Metro has the support of 2,500 volunteer hours on stage, backstage, and in the Front of House for each of our 525 shows. That is an astounding 1.3 Million hours of rehearsals, prop and set building, stage set up and performances. Our diverse team of committed volunteers range in age from young child actors to 80 plus retirees with many of the younger student generation learning and experiencing an acting or technical craft that has become a life career for many, while the older demographic is being introduced or returning to a theatrical creative heritage outside of their working careers or in retirement. They all have a “love and passion” for the theatre in common. Metro is a source of employment for a small dedicated team of up to 10 theatre production and administration contractors, as scenic carpenters, painters, set decorators and technical supervision as well as in areas of publicity, theatre administration, and Patron Services. It is a place that offers opportunities for emerging artists to practice their craft. Whether a volunteer or a staff contractor, Metro includes and values the contributions of all without regard to sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, race, ethnicity, culture, religion, language, education, income, or geography and does not tolerate such discrimination by any individual on the team. To become a member of the Metropolitan Cooperative Theatre Society requires and annual membership ($20 presently). Membership is included for patrons purchasing a Subscription series.
