Mission Statement
Our purpose at Canterbury Park Daycare Inc. is to provide a nurturing and stimulating environment where children are encouraged to grow and develop at their own pace, socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically. We provide a curriculum that encourages children to learn through play using hands-on experiences. We believe that every child is unique and acknowledge their many abilities that allow them to feel a sense of accomplishment through their successes.
About This Cause
Canterbury Park Daycare Inc. is a registered not-for-profit organization governed by general by-laws. As such, we are required to have a minimum of six members on the Board of Directors. Ideally parents would be representatives of both centres. The Board elects an executive consisting of a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. We have two standing committees in place, Fundraising and Workplace Health and Safety. The organization originally opened in River Heights as SJF Children’s in 1981. Due to declining enrolment, the Board of Directors voted to close the centre and relocate to 875 McMeans Ave East in June of 1996 to fill a need for childcare in the area. In March of 1996 they voted to change the name to Canterbury Park Daycare Inc. In May of 1998 the Board of Directors felt there was a need for School-Age Care in the community and a program was initiated at Wayoata School. Our Pre-School site is licensed for 40 children ages 16 months to 6 years. Four of these spaces are licensed for infants. Our School-Age site is licensed for 62 children ages 5 to 12 years. Twenty of these spaces are licensed for Kindergarten children. The staff at the centre has received education from various training institutions, including: Red River Community College • Early Childhood Education Diploma Program Assiniboine Community College • Early Childhood Education Diploma Program • Early Childhood Program Management Red River Community College • Early Childhood Education Workplace Program We currently employ: • 2 – Early Childhood Educator III’s • 7 – Early Childhood Educator II’s • 8 – Child Care Assistants • 1 – Early Childhood Educator in training. We provide care for a total of 102 children for both the preschool and school-age sites. We take pride in providing support for working parents in the community and challenging children to master skills and feel a sense of accomplishment during their growth. We have many trained staff that display determination and devotion, preparing learning objectives that foster development in all areas and cognitive, social, emotional, and physical domains. Canterbury Park Daycare Inc. provides an inclusive environment that values diversity and supports families and children of all abilities. We believe that children learn through hands-on play in both an active indoor and outdoor environment. The curriculum is developed with parents and our team who gathered information through observation, communication, and adult/child interactions. This allows staff to plan and implement spontaneous as well as creative activities that promote and enhance children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. These learning experiences are designed to encourage children to challenge themselves and follow through on tasks, which instills confidence in their decision making and allows them to feel a sense of success. We provide a variety of equipment and materials for the program to extend and expand on children’s play as well as to enhance skills, while maintaining their interest. Our daily schedule provides smooth and consistent transitions between activities and also allows flexibility in the routine. This enables children to feel at ease with changes that occur throughout the day. We value the relationships that grow and we pride ourselves in the “family” that is created within our centre.
