Mission Statement
Opera Atelier holds a unique place in the North American theatre community, and has grown into the pre-eminent producer of period opera and ballet in Canada. This year we celebrate 33 years of success as Canada’s premier Baroque theatre company. Our productions are presented much like they might have looked in the Baroque era with a full corps of dancers, elaborate painted backdrops, gorgeous costumes and an imaginative energy that sets Opera Atelier apart. Opera Atelier strives to create productions that would have been recognized and respected in their own time while providing a thrilling theatrical experience for modern audiences.
About This Cause
Opera Atelier is a Toronto-based opera/ballet company which produces the music/theatre of the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries. We define ourselves as a period opera/ballet company and all of our productions are accompanied by Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra on original instruments. Our productions are “historically informed”, but are neither reconstructions nor museum pieces. We strive to create something thrilling and new for today’s audiences while being guided by the aesthetics of the baroque era. Opera Atelier is dedicated to the development of Canadian artists, and offers a robust slate of education, enrichment and outreach opportunities that engage and educate new and existing audience members of all ages, particularly youth. Opera Atelier enjoys the busiest international touring schedule of any theatre company in Canada, and we have recently established an ongoing relationship with the Royal Opera House in Versailles, where we present fully staged productions every two years, appearing with as many as 80 of Canada’s most talented singers, dancers and instrumentalists.
