Mission Statement

Our corporation, Hawthorne Meadows Nursery School Inc., includes three centres: Hawthorne Meadows Nursery School, Heatherington Nursery School and Cornerstone Children's Centre. The two Nursery Schools provide care for 6 hours to 24 and 16 preschool aged children respectively. Both Nursery Schools provide transportation for the children on a small school bus. Cornerstone Children's Centre provides full day care for 15 toddlers and 40 preschool aged children. The three centres are licensed and operate under a Headstart model. We provide care for families who are socially and economically challenged. We work with a majority immigrant population. We also have a speech and language pathologist on site weekly to assess children, provide referrals and guide staff in language programming for the children. We also work with many community partners to care for and meet the individual needs of the children.

About This Cause

Below I have included the Purpose and Philosophy of 2 of our centres. The Nursery Schools are identical, with the exception of the names and numbers served so I did not think it necessary to include both. Cornerstone Children's Centre Purpose and Philosophy: The purpose of Cornerstone Children's Centre is to provide a full Day Care program for 15 toddler and 40 preschool children ranging in age from 18 months to 5 years of age according to each child's chronological and developmental needs. Our primary concern is for a healthy social, emotional, and physical climate which will enable the child to realize his/her full potential. We believe in the inherent curiosity of the child. The humanistic philosophy works towards the development of creativity, independence, and self-esteem. We stress language development as one of our primary goals. Teachers recognize and respond with respect to the dignity of each child and his/her capabilities. In acknowledging and welcoming our multicultural community, our Headstart Program supports this statement from the Ontario Ministry of Education on multiculturalism in education: "Every child, of whatever colour, race, religion, age, or sex, has the right to be treated with respect and understanding." Our programs support this belief by following the three principles of Ontario's official multicultural policy - equality, freedom of access to community services and the right to maintain one's cultural heritage. Hawthorne Meadows Nursery School Purpose and Philosophy: The purpose of Hawthorne Meadows Nursery School is to provide a full day Nursery School program for up to 24 children, which will benefit the child, the parent, and the community. The growth and development of the whole child is our primary aim. Hawthorne Meadows Nursery School's philosophy is to enable children to participate in a program designed to meet each child's individual needs as well as their social, physical, emotional and cognitive development. The teachers encourage and promote language development throughout the program. Relevant Information: Our programs are licensed and meet the Provincial licensing standards. We always work within the legal ratios. Majority of our staff are Early Childhood Graduates (12 of 15). All staff are given professional development opportunities and expected to continue their professional learning. This enhances the program for the children, ensures the staff are 'up to date' on relevant changes, betters the staff and benefits the parents. We work with many community partners, Children's Integrated Support Services (CISS), Ottawa Children's Treatment Centre (OCTC). Occasionally we work with therapists from CNIB and private physical therapists. We believe all children have the right to quality child care and do our utmost best to endure they receive it.
