About This Cause

Since 1962, Canadian Nurses Foundation has invested more than $12 million in over 2,000 nurses, nurse researchers and nursing students to advance nursing practice, knowledge and care in Canada. The past few years have been tough on Canadians. There have been economic, environmental, societal and healthcare challenges that have had significant impact on livelihoods and lifestyles. The resiliency of our country, and our supports have been tested. One particular segment of our population who have been tested more than most are nurses and nursing students. From coast to coast to coast, the Canadian Nurses Foundation understands challenges faced by those in the nursing profession and those hoping to enter it. There are challenges and barriers that are limiting the impact nurses could have on improving the lives of Canadians. There are stories of individuals not receiving the support and care they need because the system hasn’t caught up, because there are health risks that limit the “volume” of procedures or in some cases that there are “not enough nurses”. CNF is prepared to address these challenges, and those that have yet to emerge, by providing solutions to improve the care Canadians receive. Investments by CNF in recruitment, retention, mental health support, skill development and nurse-engaged research programs will focus on improving health outcomes. A vibrant, healthy Canada relies on a well-resourced nursing community. CNF’s Healing Healthcare program, with the support of its donors and allied partners in 2023. This program will leverage the past success of CNF’s long commitment to nursing scholarship and bursary programs and its recent impact in nurse-led research and pandemic response initiatives while expanding investment in mentorship & coaching, mental health supports and, new graduate retention. Healing Healthcare will focus on four pillars of strength to improve the health of Canadians. Within each pillar, funding will be provided to address equity, diversity and inclusion challenges of the past. Included in our focus will be finding opportunities to build funding opportunities for individuals from all underrepresented communities in Canada including Indigenous populations/communities. The Four Pillars of Healing Healthcare include: 1) Advancing Nursing Education Canadian Nurses Foundation will recruit and strengthen the nursing community through increases in the number and value of annual scholarships and bursaries. Providing support to candidates of Specialized, Baccalaureate, Master and Doctoral levels of education and ensuring support to underrepresented populations. 2) Healthy Minds, Healthy Nurses, Healthy Communities Canadian Nurses Foundation will partner with and fund programs that support the well being of nurse professionals and those that aspire to enter the nursing profession. Investments in programs that focus on the mental health, life skill development, support services and well being of nurses will ensure healthy communities. The Canadian Nurses Foundation will dedicate funds to opportunities that acknowledge, support and build offerings to nurses to address the pressures and challenges faced by nurses and impact the support they can offer to their patients and families.   3) Shaping the Future of Nursing Canadian Nurses Foundation is committed to expanding its impact beyond traditional scholarship and education. The Canadian Nurses Foundation has a proven track record of investing in emerging opportunities for mentorship, coaching and best practice sharing in the nursing profession. Canadian Nurses Foundation is committed to take these past learnings and expand them across the country. Partnering with our trusted stakeholders in government, health, social and education sectors, CNF will provide programs and funding to support the continued growth of nurses in their profession. 4) Health Research Canadian Nurses Foundation is committed to continuing the advancements of research that is led by, engages and/or impacts nurses in delivering the best care possible to patients. There is a strong history of nurse-led research changing practice and improving outcomes through basic and clinical research. Nurses are uniquely positioned at the front line of care delivery to identify opportunities for system change and many are equipped with the skills and knowledge to lead this research. Canadian Nurses Foundation will seek out opportunities to support practice-changing research that engage and involve nurses.
