Mission Statement

To provide stable affordable housing for low-income women of the greater Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, those with children, disabled women and older women – housing in which social justice, human rights and a culture of safety and wellbeing are actively promoted by adhering to the values of inclusivity and diversity, and respecting the autonomy of everyone involved, with the belief that housing is a right of all people.

About This Cause

Mavis McMullen Housing Society is a not-for-profit organization that provides independent, affordable housing for low-income women. The Society operates two buildings, one in the Downtown Eastside and one in East Vancouver. Mavis McMullen provides safe and stable homes for women who might otherwise be homeless, including many with children and/or disabilities. Incorporated in 1986, Mavis McMullen Housing Society opened the doors of its first building “Mavis McMullen Place” in 1988 with 34 suites housing 55 residents. The society and building came to be through the efforts of a group of women living and working in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. They saw a need for permanent, safe and affordable housing for women and children. Eight years later, in 1996, Haley Place was built. It contains 39 suites, housing 79 residents, and is located in East Vancouver. For some of this population, Haley Place acts as second stage housing. It is outside the Downtown Eastside, but close enough so tenants can access the resources they need. Since its inception, the Mavis McMullen Housing Society has worked tirelessly to continue to provide dignified, autonomous housing options to women in the Downtown Eastside. The Society aims to foster a sense of community within its building though respect and mutual support.
