Mission Statement
The Royal Canadian Institute for Science (RCIScience) envisions an engaging science culture for everyone in Canada, valuing scientific knowledge and integrity, and leading to a better society. By leveraging 175 years of experience, an engaged network of Canada’s top researchers and emerging scientists, and growing connections with diverse communities, RCIScience is uniquely positioned to rebuild trust in science, creating a stronger Canada.
About This Cause
The Royal Canadian Institute for Science has been at the forefront of science promotion in Canada since its establishment in 1849. For 175 years, we have strengthened Canada’s science culture and connected the community with science through public lectures, exhibitions, and publications. Today, with support from our donors and partners, RCIScience is working to rebuild a culture of trust in science through a strategic focus on three pillars of work: engaging the public with science, empowering science communicators, and connecting the science communication community. Engaging the Public With 175 years of experience, we are leaders in public science engagement in Canada. Our work emphasizes a community-first approach, which means seeing science as a process that is both evidence-based and compatible with storytelling, humour, and other forms of creativity. In our programs and workshops, community members actively participate in their own learning and traditional hierarchies are broken down. We create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, with attention to the specific needs and contexts of diverse communities. Our programs focus on the science of everyday life, featuring fun topics like the Science of Coffee or the Secret Life of Pets. We also venture into high-stakes issues like pandemics, cybersecurity, and climate change. Topics are relevant to the everyday needs, experiences, and interests of participants, and the collaborative approach leads to ongoing connections. We also partner with diverse communities that have been historically marginalized by the science world, a critical part of rebuilding trust. Our in-person programming is complemented by a growing digital engagement strategy which reaches multitudes through fun and accessible science content. Empowering Science Communicators RCIScience’s digital and in-person Science Communication training programs empower Canada’s talented researchers and science professionals to engage audiences with confidence and skill, helping others understand the relevance and applications of their work. These programs address a dearth of science communication curricula in Canada’s academic science programs, many of which barely skim the topic, leaving science professionals struggling to communicate their work in engaging ways, especially to non-experts. Learners gain knowledge and upskill in a variety of science communication topics including storytelling and data visualization, and gain insights on inclusive, ethical and accessible communication. Upon completion, participants can put their newfound skills into action in their own academic and professional settings, or gain hands-on experience as part of the RCIScience volunteer program. Connecting the Science Communication Community As a leader in the field, RCIScience is fostering a thriving network of science communicators across Canada and connecting us with like-minded groups internationally. Together, we are committed to breaking down barriers and rebuilding trust in science. Our professional membership opens access to learning, networking and mentorship opportunities for Canada’s science communicators. On an international level, we work with the Falling Walls Foundation to encourage international knowledge exchange and showcase the best of Canada’s science talent. Your Support Matters!
