Mission Statement

Hadley Community (previously known as Nazareth Community) provides residences with support for individuals who struggle with mental health issues, homelessness and addictions. Our residents enjoy celebrations, pet therapy, music, student stagieres, and individual treatment plans. This is coordinated by a trained, empathetic staff, and assisted by our volunteer Board of Directors. We are non denominational and transgender friendly.

About This Cause

Nazareth House (opened in 1979) Is a residence for 22 adults with ongoing struggles; they have lost their families, resided in lock down units for the mentally ill, some have wandered the streets for more than ten years. Now our residents participate in yoga, field trip activities, and are completing work re-integration programs. Anne’s House (opened in 2015) Many of the 30 women who moved into Anne’s arrived emotionally paralyzed. They suffered with malnutrition, untreated addictions, undiagnosed mental illness, abandonment, abuse, and chronic poverty. Most had lost contact with their children. The Covid pandemic has shown an increase in applicants due to conjugal violence. Student programs and volunteers We save over $80,000 per year with our volunteers and stagieres, averaging between 100-200 hours per month of support. This is so important for our residents, we also gain a wealth of expertise and innovation, and we are now recognized as a community teaching facility for stagieres from different Universities and disciplines, for example; Concordia Community Art Outreach provides onsite art classes from September to May annually. McGill medicine has 2nd year students on site to have a better understanding of the needs of our homeless community. We also have students involved in community service from Loyola, Villa Maria High School, John Rennie, Sacred Heart, LCC and Selwyn House. John's House (2020) Because the needs continue to grow… Our most recent applicants arriving are younger; in their early 20’s. So we are encouraging reintegration as soon as possible to break the “institutional mindset”. Until the Covid pandemic we had residents attending the anxiety support group at the Allan Memorial Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic, the Wellington Art Centre, PAS Action programs, and the Nazareth Community “Next Step Program”. With funding from “Hockey Helps the Homeless” we have established a program that support women and men 4 months prior to their moving on date up to and including 6-9 months after. To ensure the success of the more autonomous housing model some examples of this transition program includes, budgeting, meal planning, neighborhood resources, and how to manage anxiety and isolation. We also encourage participation in “house” activities such as journal writing, movie nights and cooking. Positivity group remains one of the most well attended weekly workshops. Guest speakers this year have included ANEB (eating disorder clinic), lawyer Gabrielle Tremblay (how to write your own will) a Tarot card reader, and the Community liaison constables from Station 12 SPVM. Going forward: 1218 Seymour Ave Because there is a dire lack of affordable housing in downtown Montreal compounded by landlords either refusing to rent to our residents or offering substandard living conditions, Nazareth Community has just purchased another building on Seymour Street. We will be able to provide additional housing in 2023 offering specifically tailored programs to increase hope and opportunities and reduce the risk of long term homelessness. We will add more beehives, build more sustainable gardens and offer a safe and supporting environment at a most vulnerable time; dealing with issues early on can help mitigate long term effects of homelessness and of mental illness. Our team works tirelessly to support our residents, interventions range from hospital accompaniment for suicide ideation to supporting a resident who wants to reconnect with a family member, both are lifesaving, both are integral. The empathy and training of our staff is imperative in the health of our residents.
