About This Cause
In view of the influx of new immigrants from Taiwan to Canada, around 40 Taiwanese Canadians in Vancouver established the Taiwanese Canadian Cultural Society (TCCS) in 1991 as a non-profit registered charity organization in Canada. The mandates of TCCS are to assist Taiwanese-Canadian newcomers and seniors, promote Taiwanese arts and heritage to the general public of all ages, and facilitate cultural exchange between Canada and Taiwan through the production of large-scale annual events, such as the Taiwanese Canadian Cultural Festival and Taiwanese and Canadian Musicians Series, as well as the co-organizing of the bi-annual Sound of Dragon Music Festival. These festivals are parts of TCCS’s Taiwan-Canada Arts Exchange Initiative. For years, TCCS has made relentless efforts to foster multiculturalism, help raise mutual respect for diversity, and promote racial harmony and equality in Canada. With the efforts, TCCS has become an essential gateway for Greater Vancouver's public to access information and knowledge of Taiwan. In 2000, the Taiwanese Canadian Cultural Society purchased the current property and established the Taiwanese Cultural Centre as the society's permanent operating location. The Taiwanese Cultural Centre received its trademark status (TMA590840) in 2003. TCCS Art Gallery showcases artistic creations from Taiwanese artists. The Art Gallery opens to the general public Monday to Friday during business hours. Each year, TCCS offers between 10 and 12 exhibitions in which each exhibition showcases only one artist or group. TCCS Community Library currently holds more than 5000 donated Taiwanese books. The genre includes history, art, culture, religion, fiction, and other general interests. The books are loaned out free of charge to the general public. Premiered in 2013, the Taiwanese and Canadian Musicians Series comprises music and fine arts. The music program includes solo, duet, trio, quartet, and chamber orchestra pieces by local contemporary Taiwanese musicians and professional musicians from Taiwan. The fine arts from local and international Taiwanese and Canadian artists are also showcased in the theatre's lobby area during the concerts. The Taiwanese Canadian Cultural Festival was formerly known as the Taiwanese Cultural Festival (TCF). Organized by TCCS between 1998 and 2009, the TCF had become the largest Mandarin/English speaking cultural event in Canada. In 2018, TCCS relaunched its signature TCF and renamed it the Taiwanese Canadian Cultural Festival (TCCF). The TCCF presents outstanding Canadian and Taiwanese artists from different disciplines, with the mandate to facilitate cultural exchange and contribute to Vancouver’s community arts landscape.
