Mission Statement
EM’s Mission is twofold: • To provide single parents and their children with housing and support services that recognize their need for stability; and • To empower families to lead healthy, independent lives. In all of the work done on behalf of the organization, all members of the Board of Directors and staff are guided by four Core Values: • Compassion: We have a concern for the well-being of single parents and their children. • Respect: We value the dignity and uniqueness of each individual living at Emily Murphy. • Equality: We strive to uphold equity and recognize diversity within the Emily Murphy community. • Empowerment: We support single parents and their children to become stronger and more confident in controlling their lives and recognizing their rights. Board members and staff seek to model these four values personally and collectively, and encourage all of tenants to do likewise.
About This Cause
Emily Murphy Non-Profit Housing Corp. (EMNPHC) was founded in 1987 as part of the province of Ontario’s commitment to the International Year of Shelter for the Homeless. It was developed in response to the needs identified by single parents and the wider community. Single parents found that they were discriminated against in the housing market and therefore it was difficult for them to secure safe, affordable, quality housing for their families; EMNPHC became the first affordable supportive housing option for single parents in Ontario. EMNPHC provides affordable housing and housing support services in a community setting for single parents, including youth who are parenting, who choose to live alone with their children. We strive to provide them with services that recognize their need for stability, and to empower families to lead healthy, independent lives.
