Mission Statement

MAWA empowers women, non-binary, trans and 2-Spirit woman-identifying people in the visual arts, and fosters their practices and professional development by providing diverse programming within a supportive community.

About This Cause

MAWA was founded in 1984 to redress gender inequity in the visual arts. In no small part thanks to its efforts, there have been many positive changes. However, women and gender diverse artists have not yet reached equality in the cultural sector nor in society. Women’s works still comprise lower numbers than men’s in public art gallery collections. Women fill fewer of the top Executive positions within large public galleries nationally. Women hold fewer tenured positions within university art departments, even though there are greater numbers of women students than men. Women receive fewer public commissions nationally. And although women make up a higher percentage of practicing visual artists (54%), we have a lower income in the sector. MAWA mentorships provide a safe place for women and gender diverse artists. The group environment encourages women, non-binary, trans and 2-Spirit people to take up space and assert their viewpoints. Through mentorship, MAWA supports the professional growth of artists who have faced gender discrimination, and values their experiences and perspectives. Although MAWA's first priority is providing peer-based education to women and gender diverse visual artists, most events and programs are open to people of all genders. Talks, lectures, workshops, screenings, makers groups and studio visits welcome all participants. Special projects, such as books, symposia and exhibitions engage the general public across the country. Winnipeg’s thriving arts community is the envy of the country, in no small part due to the efforts of MAWA. MAWA is a leader in arts mentorships nationally, and firmly believes that skill-sharing "lifts us all up". Mentorship benefits the entire arts community.
