About This Cause
Nazareth House is a supportive, non-denominational community that provides a home-like environment to women at risk and their infants. Nazareth House is responsive to women's diverse traditions and lifestyles. Women who live at Nazareth House have the opportunity to experience themselves as persons of worth and dignity. This leads to acceptance of themselves and others and ultimately to hope and independence. Counselling is provided to assist the residents in identifying particular needs, areas of growth in order to develop realistic life goal plans. Addiction counselling is provided for those who are in recovery. Other activities include: assisting residents to engage in daily meaningful activities through referral to appropriate existing community resources for employment, education, parenting skills, therapy, recreational and medical needs. Also, Nazareth House assists residents with living skills through daily activities within the house and the community. Postpartum postnatal care is provided to ensure optimum health, care and safety for the mother and infant, as well as to prevent illness during the first six week period. It is also to monitor the effectiveness and appropriateness of the mother’s care of the child, and to teach parenting skills as necessary. It is a period of support and encouragement. Our Clients come to Nazareth House Because: Need for safe, supportive, transitional housing following treatment or recovery programs for addictions, drugs and/or alcohol. Need for housing because of pregnancy; often the mother has been drug dependent and may be on a methadone maintenance program for the health of the fetus and for her own welfare. Need for supportive housing because of mental health issues, emotional, psychological or psychiatric, that is schizophrenia, manic depression etc., and these may be coupled with drug and /or alcohol dependency. Need for safe, supportive, transitional housing for women who are emotionally and/or developmentally challenged. Need for safe, supportive housing in the case of serious or long standing family abuse in the home, that is (physical, emotional and/or sexual).
