Mission Statement
Friends of Humane Society International (FHSI) is the charitable arm of Humane Society International/Canada (HSI/Canada). FHSI works to rescue dogs, cats and other animals from situations of abuse and neglect and provide emergency sheltering to them until they can be adopted into forever homes. Together with our partner group, we provide free veterinary care, spaying and neutering services in remote Canadian aboriginal communities. FHSI educates the public about the threats to wildlife including sharks and polar bears and promotes practical solutions that benefit both animals and people. FHSI works with consumers, associations, industry and government to achieve more humane farming systems and we are a proud proponent of the Meatless Monday program. FHSI has a dedicated professional team, consisting of staff from our sister organization HSI/Canada volunteering their time to oversee the daily running of the charity. The professional team works alongside our devoted emergency shelter staff and volunteers.
About This Cause
Friends of Humane Society International has active programs in many areas to help protect animals and to stop animal cruelty wherever it occurs. Animal rescue - Tens of thousands of dogs are suffering in commercial breeding operations and other facilities due to inadequate and overcrowded housing, often with poor sanitation. FHSI assists government and local SPCAs in rescuing neglected dogs from inhumane conditions. FHSI provides emergency sheltering for rescued dogs, supplying daily care, food and shelter equipment, and assists with the adoption process to help find forever homes for rescued animals. FHSI also promotes shelter adoptions and works with pet stores throughout the country to encourage them to sign our Puppy-Friendly Pet Store pledge. Northern dogs – Remote aboriginal communities in Canada have no access to veterinary services and, as a result, dog overpopulation, roaming street dogs and untreated animal illnesses/injuries are common problems. Every year, FHSI works with our partner group to provide free veterinary and spay/neuter clinics in these remote communities and helps to educate local residents about long term solutions. Shark finning - Shark finning, which involves cutting the fins from live sharks and then throwing the animals back into the ocean to die, has become a common practice in our oceans. Not only is finning inhumane, but with tens of millions of sharks killed each year, it causes profound damage to our ecosystems. In recent decades, many shark populations have declined by more than 90 percent. FHSI works to end shark finning through public education and business outreach. Farm animals - Canada raises 700 million animals for food annually. Millions of these animals are raised in intensive confinement systems so restrictive that the animals cannot turn around or extend their limbs. FHSI works with consumers, government, farmers and associations to achieve more humane farming systems. FHSI also supports the increasingly popular Meatless Monday movement, which offers everyone the chance to stand up for animals, the planet, and their health—simply by sitting down to eat.
