The Ste-Catherine d’Alexandrie Community Center is a social environment opened to everyone, with no discrimination, where community leisure is used as an important tool when being proactive in the fields of education, social awareness, promotion of healthy living, and community action. With this approach, which encourages active participation from its members, our community center’s main goal is to improve the quality of life of its participants and encourage personal growth for everyone.
About This Cause
The mission of the organisation The Ste-Catherine d’Alexandrie Community Center is a social environment opened to everyone, with no discrimination, where community leisure is used as an important tool when being proactive in the fields of education, social awareness, promotion of healthy living, and community action. With this approach, which encourages active participation from its members, our community center’s main goal is to improve the quality of life of its participants and encourage personal growth for everyone. Objectives To achieve this mission, the Ste-Catherine d’Alexandrie Community Center has set itself the following objectives in order to guide its counselling: • Support the education of the community with the collaboration of the state facilitators and community workers. • Support the parents in their parental roles and responsibilities. • Promote social integration for new arrived immigrant families within the community. • Promote prevention against social issues and promote healthy living. • Offer a variety of leisure activities while encouraging the participants to get involved. • Promote civic participation and community oriented action. An independent community center An independent community organization works for the community and on behalf of each individual member according to the means of action determined by its members, which may vary depending on the needs and wants of the community. An independent community organization also has the objective of social transformation while promoting equality within the society. Its global approach intends on meeting the needs of the people as defined by them and provide personalized services to each and everyone. Its approach is global by the fact that it not only provides services to everyone but also aims to combine implication, intervention and mobilization. Therefore, an independent community organization plays a different role and has a different approach compared to other governmental organizations. Activities Activities for kids 5 to 12 years old (4 features) 1. Academics (Homework help) 2. Leisure activities ( Scientific, educational, recreational, artistic, cooking) 3. Day camp ( 8weeks, program for family with low income) 4. March break Adult Night classes (language and computer science): English, Arab, Spanish, Mandarin, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Photoshop, Windows/Internet, Web page design and Word/Excel/Powerpoint, Learning to speak in public, origami, Chinese calligraphy, Social Dance, Zumba, Yoga. Women in action project: breakfast meetings, artistic activities, computer coffee meetings and French courses. Activities offered to seniors: modern dance, line dance, Bollywood dance, social dance, awakening of the senses, mandala, henna, artistic activities, painting, drawing,choir, theater, Yoga, Taichi, pilates, Zumba, language learning; Portuguese, Spanish, French, English, mandarin Chinese, Arabic, shuffleboard, Mah-Jong cards, cine-club, animated karaoke, musicians meeting, xbox Kinect activties, brain training on tablet bingo, oko, society games and an introduction to computer science, tablet and intelligent phone workshop, community garden, conference, formation, outdoors outings, cooking , community fridge where people can get food for free 3 days a week. Volunteers implications In 2015-2016 132 volunteers were implicated in various activities in our center ! 6750 hours of volunteer work in total for that period ! Citizen from 21 differents country! The biggest implications include: Fridge Amherst, our community fridge that offer a measure against food wasting by offering commerce donation from the neighbourhood. The food sharing access is free for everyone, no membership card required. 20hrs / week of volunteering. Individual computer, tablet, intelligent phone help. 22 volunteers implicated in 2015-2016 for a total of 421hrs of classes given. Recreational activities: more than 75% of our recreational activities in the domain of arts, physical, social and leisure and events are possible by the direct implication of volunteers.
