Project Details
Families with children make up a growing segment of Canada’s estimated 235,000 homeless. Raising the Roof has embarked on a four-year initiative to learn how to address and prevent this pressing issue.
Despite its severity, there is no national, coordinated response to address this issue. We believe that by educating Canadians, learning from and sharing innovative community-based work and developing a practical planning framework, we can develop solutions to child and family homelessness in Canada.
Our Goals:
1) To learn about current programs and services across Canada and internationally, that are already working to address family homelessness
2) To create a comprehensive early intervention and prevention framework that looks at solutions to family homelessness at three levels: primary prevention, systems-based responses, and individual/familial factors
3) To develop practical tools and resources that can be used by community organizations and government to encourage promising practices and generate recommendations.
Simply put, we want to enlist and support communities and governments in order to provide solutions for addressing and preventing child and family homelessness in Canada.
Our Progress:
We have successfully partnered with community and government organizations to better assess the current state of child and family homelessness, as well as the supports and programs that currently exist.
Most recently, we have completed a preliminary framework based on existing literature. It will be tested and integrated into the final framework which will provide solutions for early intervention and prevention of child and family homelessness.
Raising the Roof needs $50,000 to complete the Child & Family Homelessness Initiative. This amount may go toward public education and dissemination of the Final Report. The Final Report is set to be released in February of 2016 and will include solutions and recommendations to homelessness organizations and government.
