About This Cause

Marpole Oakridge Family Place (MOFP) is a not-for-profit organization which has been supporting families and children aged 0-6 years for over 42 years. Our purpose is to promote the health and wellbeing of parents, grandparents, caregivers and young children. Programs are offered in a stimulating and supportive environment that promotes parenting confidence, enhances early childhood development, reduces isolation and builds community while respecting the diverse cultural and socio-economic experiences of families. Expansion of Services: In November 2014; Marpole Oakridge Area Council Society (MOACS - Marpole's Neighbourhood House) disbanded all services they offered including programming for Seniors and Vulnerable Adults. In 2015 MOACS dissolved their Society. A community consultation meeting was held in November 2014 to address the needs for Seniors. Strong community and organization support led MOFP to take on programming for Seniors starting in January 2015. In 2015 the support for Vulnerable Adults was added to the programming to fill a gap in community and to meet the needs of the community. Our purpose is to provide direct support and education to families with children ages 0 to 6, with the goal of promoting the well-being of families in our community. We are focused on addressing several issues that directly affect the Marpole community: Low-income and single parent families facing significant barriers to accessing programs and services that promote healthy child development Isolated and immigrant grandparents raising young children The need for parent education and support to enhance parent coping skills, reduce risk factors and minimize stressed family dynamics Food security issues Barriers to integration for new immigrant and refugee families with young children such as language, cultural differences, community isolation and lack of social support networks A shortage of affordable and accessible early childhood development programs and services in the Marpole Oakridge area. Provide programs, advocacy, resources, education and support for Seniors Provide resources, education and support for vulnerable adults Our general goal is also to reduce community and social isolation by providing connection opportunities and information and referrals to other community resources and services. Our goals for parents/caregivers are to emphasize prevention measures and work directly with families to support and strengthen their parenting skills. Through one-to-one support, role modeling, parenting workshops and peer support groups, parents increase their coping skills, self-esteem and confidence as caregivers. Our goals for children are to provide a strong foundation to learn age appropriate skills and behaviours through creative play and socializing opportunities in a supportive and stimulating environment. Furthermore, more structured learning activities enhance children's confidence, self-esteem and readiness for pre-school and kindergarten. Early childhood development has a profound impact on emotional and physical health in later years. Early experiences help children to develop skills in emotional control, relationship building, self-esteem, and health practices that last throughout their lives. Offering accessible and affordable programs and services for a diverse spectrum of children and families can help support healthy childhood development in our community. Our goals for volunteers are to provide learning opportunities that support volunteers to be more confident, skilled, employable, reduce social isolation, become more connected to their community and increase their leadership skills. Our goals for Seniors and Vulnerable adults: Being and feeling safe and included, Cultivating Connections, and Lifelong Learning.
