Mission Statement

Our mission is to make sure that no one living with HIV/AIDS and life threatening illnesses lives with hunger. Achieving our mission requires the loving, coordinated effort of a community of volunteers, staff, donors and supporters. It is through this dedicated support that A Loving Spoonful has been able to provide our services free of charge for almost thirty years.

About This Cause

A Loving Spoonful is about food, love, hope and compassion. This means we aim to help those who need it most with nutritious meals, healthy grocery options and support of a registered dietician. With approximately 20% government funding, 80% of our funds are raised through generous community support, events, corporate donations, individual donors and grants. A Loving Spoonful’s purpose has always been to improve the quality of life for individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS by providing food and proper nutrition support. We are a volunteer-driven, non-partisan organization with the ongoing goal to ensure that everyone living with HIV/AIDS in our community has the adequate nutrition required to give them a fighting chance at life. A Loving Spoonful was founded in 1989 by the courageous Easter Armas, who saw a friend who had lost his job because he was HIV-positive, eating from a dumpster. Devastated, Easter began preparing homemade meals with a group of volunteers to people in the community affected by HIV/AIDS. From the determination of one woman and her tireless friends, A Loving Spoonful was born. Almost 30 years later we continue to ensure that no one living with HIV/AIDS and co-existing illness lives with hunger. Service today is much more complex than it was 30 years ago. With approximately half of our clients facing multiple medical challenges we are no longer just focusing on and treating HIV/AIDS. While all of our clients are HIV+, many of our clients have HIV and a co-existing illness. These illnesses range from diabetes to kidney failure to liver disease to cancer. In order to make our belief a reality we have several programs such as The Family Pantry Program, Emergency Services Program and The Daily Meals Program. The Daily Meals Program is the backbone of our organization providing seven frozen meals and a healthy ‘snack pack’ of supplemental groceries each week to people living with HIV/AIDS. We are extremely lucky to have a dedicated base of volunteers, including our volunteer drivers who use their own vehicles, gas and time to deliver our nutritious meals and healthy, fresh produce every Tuesday. We have a fantastic new volunteering program for groups big and small that takes place every week: volunteer groups help us portion and package batch cooked amounts of food for our frozen meals, so that we can provide even more meals to individuals in need throughout the community! In order for medications to be effective food is of utmost importance and it is our belief as a society that by meeting this basic human need, we allow our clients to focus on life’s other challenges. Fact: Those who are HIV positive are more susceptible to other serious illness such as Cancer, Hepatitis C, Diabetes, Depression, etc.
