About This Cause
Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU) – Supporting Students, Strengthening Communities The Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU) is a non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for and supporting students at Lakehead University. As the voice of the student body, LUSU provides essential services, programming, and resources to enhance student life while fostering a strong sense of community. Advocacy and Student Support LUSU works to ensure that students’ voices are heard at all levels of decision-making, advocating on issues such as tuition fees, housing, mental health resources, transit, and equity on campus. Through student representation and campaigns, LUSU fights for policies that improve students’ academic and social experiences. Essential Services and Student Spaces LUSU operates a variety of services to meet students' everyday needs, including: The Outpost and The Study Coffeehouse – Student-run food and social spaces offering affordable meals, events, and a welcoming environment. Promotions, Spaces, and Equipment Rentals – Affordable on campus printing and advertising services, space, and equipment rentals to support academic and extracurricular activities on campus. Health and Dental Plan – Accessible coverage options for prescription drugs, dental, and extended medical services. U-Pass (Universal Transit Pass) – Providing discount unlimited city transit access for students in Thunder Bay. Equity, Advocacy, and Community Support LUSU is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment through: The Food Resource Centre (FRC): A student-run food bank providing emergency food assistance, free meals, workshops, and nutritional support programs. Student Refugee Program (SRP): In partnership with the World University Service of Canada (WUSC), LUSU sponsors refugee students, offering them the opportunity to pursue post-secondary education and build a new life in Canada. Equity and Advocacy Centres: LUSU operates the Pride & Gender Equity Centre, Indigenous Students Resource Centre, and other student-led initiatives to ensure inclusive and supportive spaces for all students. Clubs & Societies: Supporting over 70 student clubs, fostering connections through cultural groups, academic societies, and recreational activities. Bursaries & Financial Assistance: Offering bursaries, emergency relief funds, and financial support for students in need. Student Life and Engagement LUSU enhances campus life through a variety of events and programs, including: Orientation Week, Clubs Fair, and Social Events – Bringing students together to connect and get involved. Sustainability & Wellness Initiatives – Programs like the Bike Shack, meal-sharing initiatives, and mental health awareness campaigns promote student well-being. Sports and Recreation – Supporting student-run sports clubs, intramural leagues, and special tournaments like the Wolfie’s Winter Cup. LUSU is committed to empowering students, fighting for their rights, and ensuring an equitable and supportive university experience. As a student-led organization, every initiative is driven by the needs and interests of the diverse student body. By supporting LUSU initiatives, you help ensure students have access to essential services and representation, allowing them to pursue personal, social, and academic growth free from barriers such as financial insecurity, food insecurity, lack of accessible resources, and systemic inequities.
