Mission Statement

To provide high school scholarships to bright and talented primary school graduates within our South Sudanese community so they can access quality school education.

About This Cause

I Stretch My Hand is a Canadian nonprofit that aims to educate, empower, and transform the lives of young people in Canada and Africa. We operate within the challenging context of Kakuma Refugee Camp, located in Kenya, which hosts over 200,000 refugees representing diverse nationalities such as South Sudanese, Ethiopians, Somalis, Congolese, Rwandans, and more. This expansive and multicultural community faces a pressing issue: limited access to high school education for promising students who performed well in primary school. For instance, the UNHCR, the primary international organization addressing refugee needs, offers only 20 high school scholarships annually from a pool of 600 applicants, equating to a success rate of just around 0.03% (data from 2021). I Stretch My Hand was established with the mission of providing high school scholarships to bright and talented primary school graduates within our South Sudanese community so they could access quality education. Currently, we operate the following programs: High School Scholarship: We provide a 4-year scholarship to primary school graduates from our South Sudanese community. Our primary objective is to remove financial barriers that hinder access to quality education. By covering expenses such as tuition fees, student allowances, school materials, transportation costs, and other educational necessities, we enable talented students to pursue higher education. This not only contributes to their personal growth and success but also enhances the well-being of the community. Currently, our program is active in the Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya. Mentorship Program: We understand that educational journeys can be challenging, so we provide invaluable guidance and support through our mentorship initiative. This program extends to our scholarship recipients and the wider community youth. We offer career guidance and facilitate connections between university students and community members pursuing similar fields of study. Our mentorship efforts currently benefit individuals in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Calgary, and Kitchener, Ontario, where a significant portion of our community resides. Naath Award: These awards recognize outstanding academic achievements among Gaat Naath students in primary and high schools within our community in Kenya. We present three categories of awards: Top High School Student, Top Primary School Student, and the Science Award, which is given to students who achieve an 'A' grade in Science subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology).
