Mission Statement

To help family members improve their relationships with their loved one with borderline personality disorder (emotional dysregulation) and to increase wellness outcomes for all family members by providing compassionate support, education, and skill-building knowledge

About This Cause

The Ottawa Network for Borderline Personality Disorder (ON-BPD) is a not-for-profit registered and incorporated charity, in its 16th year of operation and registered with the Canada Revenue Agency, CRA. The ON-BPD offers, at no cost to participants, a 12-week Family Connections® (FC) course that provides education, skills training and networking peer-to-peer support for people in a relationship with someone with BPD. Focusing on issues that are specific to BPD, the Family Connections course is hosted in a community setting and led by trained, volunteer group leaders who are usually family members of relatives with BPD and graduates of the Family Connections course. Since its inception, 40+ courses have been presented to approximately 450 family members of relatives with BPD in Ottawa and the surrounding region. Courses are offered in both English and French. In addition to presenting the courses at a number of venues in central Ottawa and in the suburbs, ON-BPD has successfully presented a TeleConnections course, the same 12-week Family Connections course, but conducted entirely by telephone, offering an option for those in rural areas, those for whom travel to a meeting place would be difficult under winter conditions, and those with other mobility issues. On a pilot basis, ON-BPD plans to present the course using Zoom video conferencing in the fall of 2019. The Family Connections course is endorsed by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), The Royal Ottawa, and local medical professionals specialized in the treatment of BPD for its beneficial impact on course participants with positive indirect influences on the family member with BPD. Recent interest from local hospital social workers in developing relationships for further education purposes can be considered a measure of the program delivery effectiveness. The course is recognized for its proven effectiveness and is now available in many locations across the US; in Canada in the National Capital Region (NCR), Toronto, and other locations; and in 17 other countries around the world. Graduates of Family Connections can benefit from the program of Continuing Connections, which offers 4 meetings per year. At each meeting, a refresher is presented on one or more of the skills that are included in the Family Connections platform.
