Mission Statement

Welfare Avenue is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to work towards the advancement and inclusion of low-income and unhoused individuals in the Greater Montreal Area, nationally, and internationally, by relieving poverty and addressing food insecurity, isolation, and accessibility to valuable resources. Our overarching theme is focused on leadership, partnership and networking to engage students, community members and other grassroot organizations in addressing our key issues.

About This Cause

Welfare Avenue's Activity #1 focuses on forming partnerships and collaborations with organizations, businesses, and corporations aligned with their mission to tackle poverty, food instability, isolation, and limited resource accessibility. This includes identifying potential partners, establishing contact, developing proposals, implementing plans, and evaluating the impact. The outreach department plays a key role in connecting with educational institutions and community organizations, aiming to increase the volunteer base, acquire donations, and organize community-support events. Activity #2 is dedicated to relieving poverty by connecting disadvantaged individuals with essential goods and services. This involves organizing donation drives, public awareness campaigns, and volunteer engagement for collecting and distributing necessities like food, hygiene supplies, and clothing. This activity also includes providing free weekly meals based on the Canadian Food Guide, connecting people with resources for mental health, employment training, and shelter, and raising awareness about homelessness and poverty. Activity #3 addresses food instability by offering free meals to low-income populations through fundraising, food donations, and collaboration with community members. This is supported by a team of volunteers and staff who ensure the preparation and distribution of healthy meals. Activity #4 combats isolation by organizing community events and fostering dialogue to create a sense of belonging among low-income and homeless individuals. This includes engaging in meaningful interactions, reducing stigma, and promoting socioemotional wellbeing. Activity #5 enhances accessibility to resources, facilitating dialogue with the target population to identify and fulfill their basic needs. This involves collaborating with local organizations to share information on various support services. Activity #6 mobilizes youth and students to address homelessness through networking with educational institutions, organizing events, and encouraging volunteer participation. Activity #7 involves working with other NPOs and charities on poverty and homelessness issues, sharing knowledge, attending events, and participating in advisory councils. Finally, Activity #8 focuses on collaborating with those concerned about social issues, attending relevant events, engaging in dialogues with the target population, and using this information to tailor services and be a voice for the less fortunate. In summary, Welfare Avenue undertakes a comprehensive approach involving various departments to address issues of poverty, homelessness, food instability, and social isolation, focusing on partnerships, community engagement, and resource accessibility.
