Mission Statement
We unite musicians in a cross-country concert that offers the healing and connective power of music in support of those whose lives are impacted by suicide.
About This Cause
We believe music heals. Our cross-Canada concert is a catalyst for suicide prevention. We bring healing and hope to those who are struggling and those left behind. In 2015, a tragedy, the death of her husband to suicide, led to an unusual quest for Elizabeth Turnbull. A dream to bring together the finest artists in Canada to perform on one day in cities across the country back to back from sunrise to sunset forming one wonderful concert event. She turned to her friends to help to make this a reality. Against incredible odds these individuals successfully made this happen one year later on September 15 2016, World Suicide Prevention Day. They were told that such an event could not happen, that the coordination alone would be an unobtainable task. To make matters even more of a challenge, Ms. Turnbull wanted to livestream the concert to all of Canada and the world. When approaching companies for help in the livestreaming, it was suggested that it would be cost prohibited. From the beginning the team of volunteers were repeatedly told that their dream was very difficult, if not impossible to accomplish and yet they kept going with the imagination, creativity and perseverance. Failure was not an option. Originally this was meant to be a one-time project and has now completed three annual events with a fifth encore happening again in the fall of 2020. Mysterious Barricades has now successfully held the event four years in a row completing a total of 56 individual concerts totally 68 hours of livestreamed music all coordinated from the command centre basement of Convocation Hall. All concert events were hosted and MC’d by Elizabeth Turnbull and Laurier Fagnan as they transitioned from city to city introducing each concert and offering words of comfort regarding Mental Health and Suicide prevention in both English and French. The event is live streamed the event for the world to see. This means that there needed to be coordination and synchronization across the country with other technical groups. As well, Mysterious Barricades has worked closely with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP) both of which became sponsors and partners to the concert event. The concerts begin at sunrise in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador and end at sunset in Victoria, British Columbia, with over 300 volunteers and performers across the country. This year the concerts included St. John’s, Halifax, Sackville, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, London, Kithener/Waterloo, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Calgary, Kelowna, Vancouver and Victoria. The Mysterious Barricades Team has made a difference in many lives because music heals, it inspires and comforts and brings joy to the heart.
