Mission Statement

To provide First Nations, Inuit, and Métis women a place in the Greater Toronto Area to heal and reclaim positive cultural identity, rehabilitation and wellness.

About This Cause

Thunder Woman Healing Lodge Society (TWHLS) is a community-driven initiative formed in response to the urgent need to break the cycle of injustice that drives Indigenous women’s over-representation in Canada’s prisons. Based in Toronto and Indigenous-led, we provide trauma-informed, culturally appropriate services to First Nations (Status and Non-Status), Métis, and Inuit 2SLGBTQIA+ women involved with the judicial system and survivors of inter-generational trauma. Our community-based housing and outreach programs help prevent detention due to housing insecurity and displacement into homelessness upon release from correctional institutions. With a focus on reducing recidivism, we support Indigenous women's self-empowerment to recover from trauma, address root causes of their vulnerability to criminalization, and take their honoured place within their community and culture.
