Mission Statement
Burnaby USAR Canada is People Helping People when Disaster Strikes Our Mission is to maintain an Urban Search and Rescue Team possessing specialized capabilities and resources for responding to disaster sites, man-made or natural. The primary purpose of our team is to safely and effectively: – Rescue those that are in danger – Search for those that are missing – Support and help those affected by the disaster – Recover those that have been lost – Mitigate major property loss
About This Cause
Burnaby Urban Search and Rescue comprises a dedicated group of volunteers committed to responding to both natural and man-made disasters, both in Canada and across the globe. Our primary focus revolves around rescue operations, disaster mitigation, humanitarian efforts, and preparedness. With a wealth of practical experience in dealing with earthquakes, hurricanes, and flooding, our team has undertaken deployments to various locations, including Nepal, The Bahamas, High River Alberta, and most recently, Turkey, in the aftermath of devastating earthquakes last year. One key aspect of our approach is self-sufficiency, ensuring that we arrive fully equipped with our own provisions of food, shelter, and water. This approach minimizes our impact on local resources. Moreover, we operate a water purification unit to supply clean drinking water to communities in need. Our specialized K9 teams are trained in live victim detection, while our tech group utilizes acoustic and seismic equipment to search for signs of life beneath rubble. Comprised of dedicated firefighters, police officers, and first responders who volunteer their time, our team is driven by a shared commitment to aiding communities in times of crisis. To enhance our capabilities, we are currently in the process of upgrading our team's capacity by incorporating drones for mapping, large area search, marine search, and building assessment. This strategic integration of technology further strengthens our ability to provide effective assistance in the face of diverse challenges.
