ALLAN GARDENS FOOD BANK

Mission Statement

To provide nutritious food in a safe and compassionate environment for members of our community struggling with food insecurity and poverty.

About This Cause

The Allan Gardens Food Bank has been providing food to our community since 2008 and is experiencing an unprecedented demand for food due to recent high inflation and escalating rental costs. Every month, over the past year, we have welcomed new clients. Since last year, the number of people using the food bank has increased nearly 50% and that number is continuing to grow. We are currently servicing more than 800 needy people weekly. This includes delivering groceries to approximately 90 residences where people’s ability to get to the food bank is compromised. Allan Gardens Food Bank needs more funding to continue support the food needs of our ever-growing clientele. Allan Gardens Food Bank services many low-income residents in the inner city of Toronto neighbourhood of Sherbourne and Carleton which has a large concentration of homeless shelters, drop-in centres, rooming houses, and other forms of low-income housing. Our clients include seniors, people with physical disabilities, people living with mental illness, members of the LGBTQ2 community, the homeless, new immigrants, First Nations people and families who are simply in temporary need. Approximately 20% of our clients are children. Many of our clients are people on fixed incomes. Many others work, trying to survive on Ontario’s minimum wage. People living in this area are poor and need food support. Our primary need is money to buy food. Food bank suppliers are struggling to keep up with demand. At times, some essential food items are in short supply and not obtainable from our food suppliers. When this happens, we buy this food from local grocers who offer us reduced prices on essentials. In addition to food shortages, the increase in the amount of food products requires more equipment to safely store food, and storage supplies to sort and distribute food to clients. We receive many food products in bulk and need to divide and repackage food items in costly storage containers suitable for families. As well, more refrigerators and a new freezer are needed. Preserving food and keeping it safe for distribution is of critical importance. Lack of refrigerated space leads to food spoilage and food waste. Your financial aid could ensure that the quantity and quality of food at the site remains safe and sufficient in accordance with the increasing numbers of clients visiting our food bank. Everyone who works at Allan Gardens Food Bank is a volunteer including all of the directors on the Allan Gardens Food Bank board. During an average week, volunteers clock an incredible 240 hours. Each month it takes at least 50 volunteers to operate the food bank successfully. We hope to maintain this volunteer community and encourage others to join us. The Allan Gardens Food Bank is a vital service in our community and we rely on financial support from individuals and businesses to continue to meet the needs of the hungry.
