Mission Statement

The mission of Evidence for Democracy is to promote the transparent use of evidence in government decision making.

About This Cause

Objectives 1) To promote the generation, collection, rigorous evaluation, and open dissemination of science and evidence-based knowledge. 2) To improve public policy and increase government transparency and accountability by proactively advocating for evidence-based decision-making. 3) To increase public demand and support for evidence-based decision-making by engaging Canadians in an ongoing dialogue on the role and importance of evidence in decision-making. 4) To develop and deploy tools and resources that will assist the public in evaluating the use of evidence in government decision-making. Strategies 1. Evidence monitoring and evaluation We will assemble and maintain a network of experts in the gathering, evaluation, communication or adjudication of scientific evidence. This network will provide ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the extent to which government decisions are evidence based. This information will become part of a publicly accessible archive that will provide the data required for independent assessment of the evidentiary track record of government decision-making by civil society, the private sector, or public institutions. Through the archive, we aim to enhance transparency and accountability of government decision-making and create a resource that can be employed to chart the evolution of evidence-based decision-making in Canada. 2. Public outreach Through public outreach campaigns we aim to educate the public on the role and importance of evidence in government decision making and to raise public awareness and involvement in decisions that are particularly important or noteworthy. This will involve: (1) a communication strategy, employing both conventional and unconventional media, whose objective will be to instill a widespread public understanding of the critical importance of evidence-based decision-making; (2) the development, validation, and deployment of simple tools that will allow members of the public to begin to interrogate and evaluate the evidentiary basis of government decisions and; (3) a range of campaigns advocating for the use of evidence in government decision making. 3. Providing secure environments for evidence communication We will provide a highly secure environment for scientists and managers from within government or other institutions to communicate evidence to a wide range of end-users. This will be accomplished by means of a restricted access, “verified by E4D” network designed to connect evidence gatherers with evidence communicators. While evidence contributors (“sources”) will be able to contribute evidence anonymously, E4D verification protocols will be developed and deployed to ensure a high degree of evidence reliability.
