Mission Statement
13th Round Fight for Life is a social enterprise and community-based organization that empowers youth to rise above adversity through structured, non-contact boxing training and life skills development programming.
About This Cause
Our programs are designed for youth between the ages of 13 - 19 and focus on the needs of a wide range of youth from diverse backgrounds. Youth from underserved communities are often confronted with complex challenges in their environment such as poverty, food insecurity, a lack of social support and limited access to educational and sport opportunities. Youth from more advantaged environments are not immune from barriers to healthy development and collectively, a constellation of risk factors can increase the likelihood that school failure, mental health concerns or substance abuse may impede a youth’s holistic development and future success. Working with community partners to identify vulnerable youth, 13th Round offers a free, intensive boxing and life-skills development program in addition to 5-weekly free youth-centered drop-in classes. Our programs reached more than 250 youth in our first year of implementation. The core program is offered in multi-week sessions four times a year starting in September, November, January and April and is implemented on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 4:30 – 6:30. The first hour of the program is led by 13th Round Fight for Life's Head Trainer, who is Boxing Ontario certified and has more than 30 years of experience. The Head Trainer is supported by a minimum of three additional volunteer coaches, who are also certified by Boxing Ontario. Youth who attend the program do not need to have any previous boxing experience or equipment. Gloves and hand wraps are provided. The second hour of the program, which takes place in a bright, modern, second floor space with a communal kitchen, focuses on creating a supportive social environment through mentorship, shared meals, academic support and wellness workshops led by qualified experts. The second-floor space also has a "quiet room" for completing homework or tutoring in addition to being a warm and welcoming environment where our social workers can provide support to youth in a private setting. In order to achieve program outcomes 13th Round applies a Positive Youth Development (PYD) approach. PYD programs engage young people in intentional, productive, and constructive ways while recognizing and enhancing their abilities. PYD is a strength-based approach to development in which youth are viewed as having assets to be developed rather than problems to be solved. PYD programs promote positive outcomes by providing opportunities for growth, fostering positive relationships and giving the support that is needed to develop young people’s assets and lessen risky behaviors. The five “C” model of PYD focuses on: confidence, competence, character, caring and community. Life skills are inter and intra personal skills that enable all of us to successfully adjust to the challenges and stressors of everyday life. The 13th Round program is designed to intentionally strengthen life skills and promote life skill transfer to non-sport settings. Each part of the program seeks to influence a different set of skills. During the non-contact boxing portion of the program the trainers carefully introduce new techniques each week, starting with foundational elements and then moving through more advanced moves as the weeks progress. Participating in the program requires a significant amount of physical and emotional discipline as well as a great deal of dedication. The life skills impacted during this portion of the program include but are not restricted to, self-awareness, self-confidence, self-management and resilience. The second hour of the program emphasizes activities that promote positive social interaction and opportunities for belonging. The life skills strengthened include communication, teamwork, conflict management, critical thinking and problem solving.
