Mission Statement

We create dynamic, well-rounded leaders through personal growth and professional development.

About This Cause

The Phoenix Leadership Project (PLP) is a grassroots, youth-led charity dedicated to supporting youth in their personal and professional leadership development. In light of the ongoing pandemic, PLP’s primary mission becomes even more crucial: to ensure that more young people have access to the development of interpersonal and leadership skills necessary for a successful life such as effective communication, time management, resilience, innovative thinking, and global advocacy. HISTORY PLP was founded by Jaclyn Grossman in 2016 after she was inspired to promote positive change in youth leadership education and training. Today, her legacy continues with a younger generation of program coordinators under the mentorship of herself and the other founding members. Based upon our participant feedback surveys, 93.6% of participants felt they experienced growth as a leader both personally and professionally and 83.8% of participants are more likely to volunteer in their communities. As an organization, we are dedicated to ensuring that our programming and volunteer opportunities are accessible and equitable, facilitated by our Equity, Diversity, Inclusivity, & Anti-Oppression Coordinator. OUR PROGRAMMING Our primary program is the Phoenix Leadership Conference (PLC), a youth-organized, youth leadership retreat held every May, the next of which will be in May 2022. Each in-person conference to date has welcomed approximately 100 students between the ages of 14 and 25. We transitioned to a virtual conference format in 2020,and delivered a second virtual conference in May 2021 to ensure the continued learning and engagement of youth leaders. The COVID-19 pandemic has been detrimental to the professional development of many youths. With the widespread shutdowns of schools and businesses, many young people are falling behind on the development of interpersonal and leadership skills necessary for entry into the workforce. Furthermore, the systemic barriers impacting Indigenous, Black, and other marginalized Canadian youth means they are disproportionately more likely to fall behind than their white peers in the development of interpersonal and leadership skills. Therefore, PLP seeks to address this dearth of interpersonal and leadership skill development by making its 2022 conference, as well as all programming going forward, accessible by providing full or partial scholarships to all participants, with conference attendance spots secured for Indigenous and Black Canadian applicants. PLC 2022 is tentatively scheduled from May 20th - 23rd, 2022 at Olympia Sports Camp in Muskoka, Ontario. This 4-day weekend will consist of a variety of small scale group sessions, large scale group activities, and key-note speakers designed to get delegates out of their comfort zones, provide them with professional leadership skill-sets with real-world applications, and give them the opportunity to learn about themselves and the world around them.
