Mission Statement
Vancouver Food Runners was founded as a direct response to the disconnect between food waste, hunger, and environmental sustainability.
About This Cause
Did you know that 58% of all food produced in Canada is wasted or lost, meanwhile 1 in 7 households in British Columbia go hungry? Making matters worse, the emissions from decomposing organic waste in Canadian landfills currently account for 20% of national methane emissions. Vancouver Food Runners is seeking Food Rescue Heroes to join our network of passionate volunteer drivers. You will pick up surplus food from a Vancouver food business (grocery store, bakery, green grocer, or restaurant) and directly deliver it to those who need it most. We partner with nonprofit organizations such as the YWCA, Covenant House, local neighbourhood houses, shelters, and schools to help us deliver the food and put a stop to hunger right in our very own city. How is Vancouver Food Runners different? We use innovative app technology to coordinate our food rescues. Once a volunteer claims a food rescue, they can find their way to the food donor and their final destination with the push of a button. Be a part of the solution by diverting viable food destined for the landfill, and instead deliver it to people experiencing food insecurity in Vancouver.
