Mission Statement
Square Peg Society is a non-profit, charitable organization supporting Autistic (ASD) adults and their families. We seek ways for autistic adults to participate in, to lead events & activities that we host, and to connect them with opportunities for education, employment, life skills development, and social engagement. Our goal is to assist our autistic adults in building self-supporting, independent lives, in communities where they feel they feel respected and included.
About This Cause
Square Peg Society began in 2014, by families concerned about the lack of services for their autistic adult children. We serve an under-served sector of the autism community. Firstly, we serve only adults and their families. Secondly, we focus on those not well-connected with the disability community - those late-diagnosed, those who have not been able to access a diagnosis, and those who self-identify as autistic. The diagnostic term Autism Spectrum Disorder is too broad to meet everyone’s needs. SPS aims to fill the gap in services, and to foster engagement and inclusion for autistics in the broader community. Square Peg Society offers our individuals and their families: • Information meetings on topics relevant to the lives of autistic adults • Emotional support and avenues for social engagement • Alliances with service providers and other organizations with whom we may partner to host meetings or to provide workshops on issues of common interest • Advocacy to promote government policy change. The purpose of SPS events and programs is to support mental health, to encourage the social engagement of autistic adults with each other, and to promote their inclusion in society overall. We believe that if our adults are well-supported they will be more confident, better equipped to advocate for themselves, suffer less from stress. anxiety, and depression, and will be more employable, happier, and engaged in their communities.
