About This Cause
Maisha means life in Swahili. Maishacanada.com is a registered not-for-profit mentorship organization in Canada. Our members are mainly young immigrant students of East African descent. Maisha Canada mentorship program attempts to highlight what life in Canada entails as it relates to academic and professional success as well as mental health resources. We are a mentorship group that equips young people with the necessary knowledge needed to excel in their academic or professional careers. We do this by interviewing members to highlight success factors in different industries on our website. We also host in-person mentorship events where experts from select industries give talks about their professions. We also schedule regular video webinars with more experienced professionals who share their academic and career stories. For new students, the overarching goal is to help close information gaps and speed up their Canadian knowledge acquisition. The hope is to help them make better and well-informed academic and career decisions. Maishacanada.com also plays a mentorship match-making role. Students browse the site and become aware of who is where and doing what. The goal is to connect people based on shared experiences, either using school subject matter, location of residence, or professional industry. The following themes are front and center of our activities to support at-risk youth and young immigrants. • Navigating the job market as a young person with limited work experience. • Scoring internships in areas of one’s interest • How to prepare and succeed at interviews • Meeting job requirements • Co-op requirements and pre-graduation professional work experiences • Professional designation process • On-the-job success tips We solicit feedback from our members and measure our success by the number of young people who get internships, co-ops, or new jobs as result of information they learned from one of our events or someone they met at our event. Or young people who get into their university or academic field of their choice because of our event or knowledge sharing fire-side chat. Some testimonials of success stories that came out of our program can be found on our website here: https://www.maishacanada.com/testimonials
