Mission Statement
The Leftovers Foundation’s goal is to reduce food waste and prevent the greenhouse gas emissions caused when good food is left to rot. One of the best ways to do that is to get the food to community organizations working with vulnerable populations, ensuring that it can be used where food is most needed.
About This Cause
The Leftovers Foundation empowers volunteers to rescue good food that vendors can’t sell and deliver it to service agencies running food access programming for clients facing barriers. Our flagship Rescue Food program started in 2012 in Calgary, and now operates in Edmonton, Winnipeg, Lethbridge, Red Deer, Hinton, Airdrie, and Selkirk as well. There is a lot of good food out there to rescue! On average per month, the Rescue Food program ● diverts over 90,000 lbs of good food from landfill; ● prevents more than 56 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions; ● saves our service agency partners over $310,000 in food costs; ● and supports more than 82,500 meals for community members in need. What kinds of food do we rescue? All kinds! From breads, donuts, and pastries at bakeries’ close of day, to food nearing its best-before date from small grocery stores, to large donations of produce from wholesale suppliers, to unsold food following farmers’ markets, to prepackaged meals nearing their sell-by date. Where does the food go? Wherever it will be the most useful! To school snack programs for students from low-income families, to community kitchens, to be made into meals for people in emergency housing and long-term care, to community fridges, and to be distributed to people in crisis by community support groups. How does it get there? With the support of our volunteers! Whether it’s signing up in our app to complete a Rescue Food route, joining Leftovers staff in our Calgary or Winnipeg warehouses to break down large-scale donations for distribution, or helping a neighbour to harvest their backyard gardens or fruit trees to donate, our amazing volunteers lend their hands and hearts to power everything we do.
