Mission Statement

ROOTA is a Canadian charity whose mission is to alleviate poverty and enhance education by providing adult literacy programs and preparatory courses to persons who are poor or in need. ROOTA aims as well to relieve poverty by establishing and maintaining an educational daycare for needy children. It also provides basic necessities of life, including food, and clothing to families who are in need. For the onset, we are currently supporting the marginalized community of the Zabaleen (trash collectors) of Egypt. Our objective is to promote environmentally safe solid waste management through empowering the Zabaleen community particularly women, children, and youth to become technologically able to manage a viable system of household waste including recycling in Egypt through comprehensive development: education, social, economic, and cultural programs to become agents of change for a better environment. The Zabaleen Community is extremely vulnerable due to the nature of their work and the conditions to which they are exposed. Specifically, they have limited economic opportunities, educational prospects, and high rates of disease. The purpose of ROOTA’s work is to empower community members and provide them with the resources and support they need to break this intergenerational transmission of poverty.

About This Cause

We are aspiring to create a workforce development initiative for the Zabaleen community by empowering women to achieve economic independence through learning a new trade and teaching them alternative methods of recycling. This will give us at ROOTA an opportunity of exploring the great potential of success that could be achieved among the less fortunate if given an opportunity. The Zabaleen community is comprised of around 30,000 inhabitants, who make a livelihood selling waste and repurposing trash. A Zabaleen family business will recycle 1.5x more than Germany - which holds the highest rate of household recycling. This occupation is perceived traditionally as a family business that is handed down from one generation to the next. Poor household income and scarcity of job opportunities, especially for women in the targeted areas are detrimental. By teaching women a recycling skill the women will be empowered, will enter the workforce, and will be economically independent. This will also give them a bargaining tool in a culture where women have no voice. Women are allowed to work with the family sorting and recycling garbage and thus have no independent income. Accordingly, many women find it difficult to leave their homes to work away from their children, especially the very young. Hence, our reaching out to them in their own environment. The unsafe garbage sorting method and undeveloped waste recycling work, increase the hardship of working in garbage sorting and wastes due to lack of knowledge of safe and creative recycling technology for the waste which eventually leads to the continuation of these families at the same economic level without development. Hence, continues the cycle of poverty. Our objective is to provide opportunities for workforce development by elevating these individuals from the cycle of poverty and empowering women by teaching them alternative recycling methods. Women will be undergoing a three months training on recycling methods of glass after which they will be able to learn a skill that will be creating job opportunities and economic empowerment for women and girls. They will be qualified to use glass waste recycling technology and eventually provide extra income for the household and as well as independence for women. Our ultimate goal as a Canadian Registered Charitable Organization is to provide sustainability, financial independence, and economic development for the women in the Zabaleen community. Hence, by providing training for recycling glass, the women will be learning a new trade and will be able to assist with the family income as well as earning a living and supporting financially the family. It also gives these women a bargaining tool in their family entity. ROOTA will assist in promoting the Zabaleen products at Fair trades which will act as a double sword weapon as it will increase awareness about the community, promote their products as providing economic independence and extra income for the Zabaleen women. We are currently planning a virtual event in the hopes to increase awareness about this marginalized community and their recycling of garbage in Egypt. In addition, ROOTA accomplishes the following projects:- o Nursery from 6 months to 6 years old. 0 Providing cribs for kids o Education of children who didn't go to school. o Mother and child care. o Girls literacy classes for the preparatory level. 0 Sponsorship of women to continue higher studies either at universities or colleges 0 Providing a Condensed Literacy Education Program (CLE) to adults allowing them to either continue further higher education or enter the workforce. 0 supporting children to stay in school 0 Providing textbooks for students 0 Providing income-generating projects for women by teaching them a trade i.e. to work on a sewing machine or a loom. Also, providing home looms as deemed necessary to those who need them.
