Mission Statement
Empowerment Squared is a Canadian charity building a world where everyone is empowered with the tools and opportunities to thrive and contribute to society. We do this by empowering newcomer and marginalized youth and communities in Canada and across the world to succeed through mentorship, access to post-secondary education, professional skills development and entrepreneurship, and sports and recreation.
About This Cause
Empowerment Squared is a responsive, community-based organization that is agile and adaptable to emerging community needs and innovations. As such, we rely heavily on donations to facilitate improvements to program design, development and expansion. We are committed to accountability and have provided audited financial statements since our inception as a charity, and also widely distribute an annual report to inform and engage our stakeholders and hold ourselves responsible for performance. The organization is led by a dedicated team of experienced staff, an accomplished board of directors, an advisory council of noted leaders, and hundreds of volunteers. Empowerment Squared is proud to have the support and active engagement of a committed and aligned set of partners across the world who support the organization in the pursuit of its mission. Prior to March 2020, Empowerment Squared was engaging with 90 newcomer and marginalized participants weekly across various programs. We completed rapid assessments with over 35 families in late March 2020 to determine how Empowerment Squared could continue to support families during this unprecedented time. Top areas of need identified were food, household essentials, and access to technology. We continue to administer assessments every two weeks to determine emerging needs. • With the help of federal funding, we have supported over 200 individuals with food, household essentials, access to technology and personal protective equipment • All programs were adapted to be hosted virtually, primarily through Zoom • Utilizing features like breakout rooms, Empowerment Squared was able to mimic in person programs and continue to create meaningful interactions and relationship development between volunteers and participants • Thankfully, we continue to receive amazing support from volunteers and community members and did not see a drop in volunteer engagement Empowerment Squared provides newcomer and marginalized youth ranging from grades kindergarten through 12 with a diverse scope of programming that helps them to succeed in their academic and personal pursuits, build their confidence, and empower them to make safe and healthy decisions in their day to day life. We continue to offer hybrid (online & In-person) educational programming 3 days a week. Proximal and distal outcomes of participants: • Improved academics and social skills • Improved learning skills (e.g. responsibility, independent work, initiative, organization, collaboration, self-regulation) • Improved grades and confidence in academic abilities • Increased educational goals and aspirations • Improved perception of/belief in the value of education • Improved willingness to take on academic and social tasks In 2021, we introduced the Student and Family Advocacy (SFA) program based on observations that more and more families were in need of more direct advocacy support with navigating the education system. The goal of the program is to provide more equitable educational outcomes for Black, racialize and newcomer youth by providing educational support and acting as a system navigator. The SFA’s primary objective is to work alongside students to assist them with educational pathway support and guidance. By acting as system navigators and providing culturally relevant, community based advocacy, we aim to support and empower families. After participating in the SFA program, students/families will be more confident navigating the education system, or other government systems more effectively (such as the immigration, legal, and housing systems). After participating in the SFA program, students/families have increased their knowledge of available resources and community agencies where they can access support. Liberian Learning Center The Liberian Learning Center is a collaborative project led by Empowerment Squared in partnership with Rotary International, Rotary Club of Hamilton, Rotary Club of Monrovia, Paynesville City Corporation, mcCallumSather, and Hamilton Public Library, and Tri Buchanan Development Corp. The Center is being built in multiple phases on the site of Paynesville City Hall and will include Liberia’s only public library, coworking and business incubation spaces, sports and recreation facilities, and event facilities. The Liberian Learning Center is a complex of three facilities in Paynesville, Liberia, focused on transforming the educational landscape in the city and providing a diverse set of resources to a catchment of over 300,000 community members.
