Mission Statement

The Roberta Bondar Foundation (RBF) strives to cultivate a sense of awe, respect, and appreciation for other life forms that share our planet. The RBF fuses environmental science and visual art through photography of the natural world to stimulate curiosity and creativity, and to promote responsibility, protection and conservation of our intricate, life-sustaining ecosystems. RBF connects Canadians with the natural world, reducing a growing nature deficit in society, inspiring conservation action, and making a timely and important contribution to the improved health and vitality of people of all ages. Built on the universal language of photography, programs include: travelling exhibitions; summer camp and school programs for youth; wilderness programs for northern and aboriginal youth; environmental education resources and leadership training; and research projects to study biodiversity.

About This Cause

In 2009, Dr. Roberta Bondar, the first Canadian woman in space, and the world’s first neurologist in space, co-founded The Roberta Bondar Foundation (RBF), a charitable organization that takes an inspiring approach to our growing environmental challenges. The RBF fuses environmental science and visual art through photography of the natural world to stimulate curiosity and creativity, and to promote responsibility, protection and conservation of our intricate, life sustaining ecosystems. A fundamental belief that underpins the work of the RBF is that the more we learn about our environment, and the better we become at asking important questions, the better equipped we will be both to respond to change, and to influence positive change. Through its four interrelated program pillars, The Roberta Bondar Foundation (RBF) directly addresses a growing nature deficit in society, and inspires action to protect our planet’s ecosystems. Bondar Challenge: Our signature program for youth utilizes the camera as a gateway to learning about our natural environment. By utilizing photography, and uniquely combining art and environmental science, youth are excited to get outdoors and are challenged to experience and examine the natural world around them while building healthier lives. The program reaches thousands of youth each year through partnerships with EcoSchools Canada (school programs), the Canadian Camping Association (youth camps) and Parks Canada (wilderness trips). Travelling Exhibition and Learning Experiences (TELE): Over 500,000 people at galleries, science centres and museums across Canada have viewed the RBF’s interactive exhibitions. The curated exhibitions of large fine art and student photographs are accompanied by audio-visual and online support. The program helps to build and support arts and cultural experiences in local communities, while inspiring action to protect our natural world. In addition to exhibiting across Canada, we have taken a TELE internationally to Egypt where we exhibited at the UNEP-COP 14 (Conference of the Parties on Biological Diversity). At this conference numerous decisions were taken on a 2050 Vision for Biodiversity, Health and Biodiversity, Biodiversity & Climate Change, Sustainable Wildlife Management, Protected Areas and Effective Conservation Measures, as well as a number of other critical areas. Workshops, Seminars, and Speaker Series: These engaging sessions excite and foster curiosity of our natural environment through the use of audio-visual content for all age groups. Dr. Bondar shares her passion for the natural world and inspires action to protect our life-sustaining ecosystems. Research and Publications: The RBF develops resources to ensure that deeply researched information is integrated into learning materials and all of our programs. We utilize a variety of channels, including on-line and print, to promote and contribute to knowledge of the world’s biodiversity and to address growing environmental challenges such as habitat loss and climate change.
