Mission Statement

The RFDA was formed in 2003 to develop a reliable and equitable emergency food distribution strategy and a stronger system for food security across Northwestern Ontario. We are a central point for collaboration between 60+ partners and agencies. We facilitate food collection, preparation, and distribution to food banks, shelter houses, schools, families, and other social support organizations in 35+ rural and remote communities across the region. We've built up a strong network of partners working towards change and our role has grown far beyond food distribution. The RFDA is a home to build hope; a place to provide access to education and social supports, to develop lasting economic opportunities, to celebrate vibrant cultures, and to foster greater well-being for generations to come. It is our vision to "let no one go hungry" and our mission to end poverty cycles by providing opportunities that build pathways forward.

About This Cause

Our work to achieve systemic change for poverty reduction across Northwestern Ontario involves four main avenues: Food Supply -- Reliably and equitably securing and distributing healthy and culturally appropriate foods to those in need. Education -- Providing nutritional literacy, cooking skills, employment skills, training, and other knowledge opportunities to alleviate cycles of poverty. Community Inclusion -- Supporting opportunities for marginalized groups to have a voice and a space, be connected to resources, share knowledge, feel a sense of belonging, and participate meaningfully in society free of discrimination. Advocacy -- Amplifying the voices of marginalized groups and advocating for policy changes that address poverty and support the well-being of our region for future generations.
