About This Cause

Green Teams of Canada (charity #809488448RR0001) is a national charity focused on connecting community members to hands-on educational and environmental activities that work to restore and conserve habitat. There are two programs that are part of GTC - Greater Victoria Green Team and the Lower Mainland Green Team. Together, these teams make up the largest volunteer conservation base in all of British Columbia, having engaged over 15,000 volunteers since 2014. Green Teams of Canada collaborates and partners with other agencies and organizations to work together and improve the environment. They have collaborated with over 100 organizations (federal, provincial and municipal parks, stewardship groups, environmental organizations and youth groups), and have formed partnerships with a dozen agencies. The aim is to strengthen community and environmental stewardship through collaboration, education and team-work. Volunteer opportunities are found on our Meet-up pages below: https://www.meetup.com/Greater-Victoria-Green-Team/ https://www.meetup.com/the-lower-mainland-green-team/ Program Objectives - Connect people, including youth, to nature - Connect people to one another and create community - Educate and raise awareness about environmental issues parks face - Provide opportunities to: gain outdoor career experience, learn how to work as a team and be a leader - Restore habitat and increase biodiversity - Infuse volunteers into existing stewardship and habitat restoration programs and groups Activities - Identifying and removing invasive plants - Planting native plant vegetation - Picking up litter from parks and shorelines - Preparing vegetable beds and harvesting food from local non-profit farms Geographic Area Served Metro Vancouver and Greater Victoria. In the future we plan to create green teams in other urban areas in BC and across Canada Demographic We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in our activities. We have however tapped into the demographic aged 12-45, especially youth and at-risk youth Background and Context As we become more urbanized and increase our screen time, we spend less time in nature. Without that connection to nature, people fail to see how important it is to their lives and lose interest in protecting it. The Lower Mainland Green Team was founded in 2011 on the social media site meetup.com, it inspired the creation of the charity Green Teams of Canada. In 2014 the Greater Victoria Green Team was created. From our humble beginning with little more than a laptop and a passion for the environment, we have grown to become one of the largest environmental volunteer groups in British Columbia. 12 awards won for social innovation Starfish Top 25 Environmentalists under 25 in Canada Award 2022 BC Achievement Community Award 2019 iATS Innovator Award, Local Hero 2018 District of Saanich Environmental Award 2017 Vancity Social Innovation Award 2016 Volunteer Victoria Award 2016 YWCA Environmental Sustainability Award 2014 Recycling Council of BC Award 2014 Restoration Catalyst Award 2014 Earth Day Canada Home Town Heroes Award 2013 Nature Vancouver Frank Sanford Award 2013 Jane Goodall Institute Recognition 2011
