Mission Statement
The O’Brien Farm Foundation will manage the 31 acre historic O’Brien Farm to preserve and promote the Farms' cultural and land resources for future generations. The Foundation will create programming that educates the public, especially our youth, about the importance of preserving green spaces to maintain our contact with nature. It will work with other groups that promote local food security, organic gardening, sustainable land practices, with an emphasis on the history of farming and it’s strong ties to the Irish settlement of St. John’s.
About This Cause
The O'Brien Farm Foundation was formed in 2011 in order to preserve the 200 year old O'Brien Farm property, demonstrate environmental education and preservation, and advance local food and agriculture opportunities. This 31 acre site sits within the City of St. John's, Newfoundland, and had been used as a dairy farm, pasture lands, vegetable farm, and managed forest by the O'Brien family and other local families for nearly two centuries. When the last O'Brien family member passed away without any direct living relatives in 2008, a working board of local professionals and a small staff set out to preserve what was left of a declining property, and develop future focused initiatives. The O'Brien Farm Foundation has completely remodeled and renovated the historic Thimble Cottage back to its original structure and function. The Foundation has preserved many historic walking trails and gardens on the property. It has developed a series of professionally vetted plans to increase access to the site, demonstrate Irish-Newfoundland farming history, provide a working site for young and beginning farmers, and develop environmental education programs specific to youth. O'Brien Farm currently partners with Cloudberry Forest School, an early childhood environmental education and outdoor play social enterprise which hosts over 300 students per year. After successful outreach and fundraising campaigns, the O'Brien Farm Foundation is about to commence construction on phase 2 of development in which a Learning Centre and additional agricultural infrastructure will be constructed. This phase will allow O'Brien Farm to increase its ability to demonstrate and educate about local agriculture production and business creation, local food security improvement, environmental education, and other related affinities.
