Mission Statement

MitoCanada exists to create a world where all lives are powered by healthy mitochondria.

About This Cause

We all need energy to survive. It is as simple -- and complex -- as that. Humans are fueled by trillions of tiny powerhouses called mitochondria. Present in almost every cell in our bodies, they generate the energy we need to keep our hearts pumping, lungs breathing, brains thinking and lives moving forward. When these energy producers fail, so does our health and quality of life. Common complications associated with mitochondrial disease include strokes and seizures, muscle weakness, gastro-intestinal problems, blindness, deafness, heart disease and liver disease. It affects children, teens an adults and has been linked to more diseases such as: Alzheimer's, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, diabetes, ALS, MS, dementia and cancers, among other illnesses. MitoCanada envisions a future where those living with mitochondrial disease are inspired, empowered and supported today and until a cure is found. We work everyday to transform the outlook, quality of life and sense of community for people impacted by mitochondrial disease through education, awareness, support and transformational patient focused research. As Canada’s only registered charity focused on mitochondrial disease, we: - support quality of life for those living with mitochondrial disease - support awareness and education - advocate for those living with, or at risk of developing, mitochondrial disease - fund research that is patient-focused and transformational MitoCanada exists to transform the outlook, quality of life and sense of community for people impacted by mitochondrial disease through education, awareness, support and transformational patient focused research.
