Mission Statement
Dedicated to improving the lives of children diagnosed with dyslexia, the Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation Learning Centres for Children provides quality, state-of-the-art tutoring to those with difficulties in reading and writing, and related scholastic skills.
About This Cause
Children should have the world by the tail. Their “job” is to respect their parents, get along with their peers, go to school and get good grades. But what if they simply can’t do that. Every day they try to listen, try to understand, try to learn but they just can’t. No one can get through to them. These children often have dyslexia. A condition that changes the way the brain processes information. These children learn differently. The frustration, the pain and the loss of self-confidence grows each week as this learning difference goes unrecognized and untreated. Our learning center provides FREE tutoring to children suffering from dyslexia. Using the Orton-Gillingham method of tutoring, we provide children with the necessary skills for children to adapt their learning style and overcome the difficulties that dyslexia causes in school children when learning is at such a critical stage of life. Each child is provided 2 years worth of tutoring. Upon completion of the program, children become highly successful in their regular school learning with the necessary skill taught by our program. Funds going to learning center are primarily used in the development of our volunteer tutors in providing them certification in the Orton-Gillingham method in exchange for a 2 year commitment to tutoring children. The Orton-Gillingham method is an instructional technique that is used to teach people with dyslexia to use multiple pathways to learn and is recognized as an effective approach to treating dyslexia.
