Mission Statement
Our mission at Dancing With Parkinson's is to provide dance classes and artistic experiences that enrich the lives of people with Parkinson’s Disease, and the lives of their families, friends, and caregivers. Our vision is to provide a safe, accessible, and inclusive environment where all people with Parkinson's Disease throughout Ontario can explore the potential of their own movement and artistry while experiencing the emotional, cognitive and physical benefits of dancing to music in classes designed for them.
About This Cause
Founded in 2008 by professional dancer Sarah Robichaud, Dancing with Parkinson's (DWP) is a Canadian charitable organization that offers specialized dance classes for seniors with Parkinson’s disease. DWP’s core mission is to bring seniors out of isolation and into an artistic community where they can dance and connect with others. DWP currently offers 15 dance classes per week at 14 different locations across the Greater Toronto Area. In response to COVID-19, DWP closed its doors to all of its' in-person' locations on March 12, 2020. While navigating our way through social distancing, DWP continues to be guided by its mission of bringing seniors out of isolation and fostering connection through dance. To this end, DWP has been offering free live dance classes through Zoom seven days a week to over a hundred Seniors across the country. Our primary aim is to keep seniors active, connected, and engaged while we are all in physical isolation. Initially, we started these classes for our current roster of Parkinson’s dancers, but increasingly more seniors and senior’s organizations have asked to join the Zoom classes. We anticipate within the next two weeks we will have over 300 seniors across the country taking part in our classes. DWP is offering all of these classes for free. The participants are telling us our free classes are helping to keep them connected, active and mentally and physically well during this isolation period. DWP believes that these fun and safe classes could be highly beneficial to ALL seniors – particularly during this period of social isolation, and that the online classes will become part of our core offerings in addition to the in person classes once the Pandemic passes. DWP also engages in a yearly intergenerational dance project with different youth groups creating dance and music together over a period of nine months and then culminating in a live public showing.
