Mission Statement

Mental Health challenges are hard. People are struggling whether living it or working in it, or both. It’s really hard. And it doesn’t need to be so hard. We know some ways to make it easier. We call it FamilySmart™ and it means seeing each other, hearing each other, being kind to each other. FamilySmart™ can make things easier, and it can save lives.

About This Cause

FamilySmart™ started with one Mom on a journey to find help and support for her son. The caring connections made along the way, with doctors, teachers, psychiatrists and other Moms and families, were pivotal because these connections grew and grew, bringing people together to work for the wellness of her son and family. Caring, connected relationships are at the core of FamilySmart™. With caring, connected relationships, all working together for the mental wellness of children and youth, it is possible to face new challenges and change how we approach situations. Helping young people, families and service providers to make these caring connections is the core of all of our work. We call it FamilySmart and it is embedded into our core programs: • Parent in Residence and Youth in Residence (PiR/ YiR) Program – Parents in Residence and Youth in Residence are young people and families with lived experience in child and youth mental health. The PiR/YiRs utilize each other and their collective experience and expertise to come alongside young people, families and service providers. The PiR/YiRs have a team of peers and a management team that supports the valuable work they do. The PiR/YiRs provide peer support, mentoring, system navigation, and access to information, resources, networks and education. Our team of PiR/YiRs currently work in many BC communities, hospitals, and other sites providing Child & Youth Mental Health Services and in Edmonton, Alberta at CASA Child, Adolescent & Family Mental Health. • Health Literacy - FamilySmart believes it matters that health literacy about people, needs to be created with those people. This is our practice in our 2 Health Literacy Programs: • ‘in the know’ provides expert speakers on topics important to families who are parenting a child or youth with a mental health and/or substance use challenge and/or those working to support the mental health of children and youth. Watch an ItK video from our library or join an online discussion with other families to connect and learn. Online ItK discussions are facilitated by Parents in Residence and hosted monthly for families to join. • May 7th National Child & Youth Mental Health Awareness Day • FamilySmart Practice - Training & Resources to achieve better mental health outcomes for children and youth throughout Canada. FamilySmart Practice is about enhancing the experience and quality of services, information, and supports for children, youth, and their families through a shared practice we call Together-Centred™. It brings together young people, families and service providers to learn with and from each other and develop intentional personal and professional practice that can enhance child and youth mental health. Last year, we connected with over 10,000 people, many of whom did not know where else to turn to seek support for their child. We act as the catalyst to connect these families to health care providers, policy makers, educators, researchers, service providers & businesses in order to improve mental wellness across Canada. Our primary focus is to connect with families as early as possible in their journey to ensure children receive the help they need before things get worse.
