Mission Statement

Preventing malnutrition in North Korea by providing essential nutrients to children and pregnant and lactating mothers.

About This Cause

Our Mission North Korea, with an estimated population of 25 million, has experienced ongoing food shortages since the 1990s. Pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children under five years of age are most vulnerable. They are at risk of becoming malnourished because their diets lack sufficient vitamins, fat, minerals, and protein. First Steps is a Christian organization committed to preventing malnutrition in North Korea by providing essential nutrients and vitamins. Our Soymilk Program: In the cities and remote villages throughout North Korea where undernutrition is widespread, fresh soymilk is delivered to children at daycares, kindergartens, and orphanages. Soymilk is highly effective in combating child malnutrition because it is rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and protein. Our soymilk program currently provides more than 100,000 children with a daily cup of nutrient-rich soymilk, but there are countless others who need our help. One in five children in North Korea are suffering from chronic malnutrition, putting them at risk of dying from curable diseases. With each donation of $30, you can support the health of 30 children by providing them with a daily cup of soymilk for a month. Sprinkles prevent mineral and vitamin deficiencies which often lead to fatal health problems such as anemia, rickets, and diarrhea. First Steps has partnered with the Institute of Child Nutrition (ICN) to distribute Sprinkles to pregnant women, nursing mothers, and newborns throughout North Korea. Since the beginning of our sprinkles program, they have been well-received as an essential nutritional supplement for women in DPR Korea, as most now view sprinkles as a necessity for all pregnant and nursing mothers. First Steps visits our partner clinics in DPR Korea to confirm that Sprinkles have been delivered according to our distribution plan, confirming that they are given to those who need it most. With each gift of $50, you can support the health of a mother and her baby by providing them with a year’s supply of micronutrient sprinkles.
