Mission Statement
The Toronto Biennial of Art (TBA) is an international contemporary visual arts event that is as culturally connected and diverse as Toronto itself. For 10 weeks every two years, the city and its partner regions are transformed by exhibitions, talks, and performances that reflect the local context while engaging with today’s most urgent issues. With the objective to make contemporary art available to everyone, the Biennial’s free, citywide programs aim to remove barriers, bridge communities, inspire learning, contribute to global conversations, and amplify calls to action.
About This Cause
The Toronto Biennial of Art (TBA) launched in 2019 and was a popular and critical success. The Biennial provides expanded understandings of contemporary art practices and is building a legacy of free, inclusive, and accessible contemporary art programming in Toronto, Mississauga, and their surrounding communities. In 2019, TBA welcomed artists, participants, and performers from more than 70 places of origin, including 29 Canadian and international First Nations and Indigenous communities. Almost half of the Biennial’s participants self-identified as Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour. The 2019 edition welcomed almost 300,000 unique visitors, including 1,000s of students through school group visits, and resulted in $29M in economic impact. The second edition of the Biennial, What Water Knows, the Land Remembers, taking place March 26 to June 5, 2022, is an opportunity to invest in the recovery of Toronto through arts and culture—bringing creativity, community, and connection back to our city when we need it most. Now, more than ever, we need the inspiration and connection that art brings us. By supporting free art exhibitions and programs across Toronto, you will be investing in the renewal and regeneration of our city.
