Mission Statement
Project Shelter Wakadogo is a grassroots charity, registered in the United Kingdom, Canada and Uganda. Our vision: Our vision is to educate a new generation of children in northern Uganda by providing quality education that they need to shape a prosperous future for themselves. Our mission: Wakadogo's mission is to create a safe, stimulating environment for the intellectual, creative and physical development of the children of Acholiland.
About This Cause
Wakadogo means ‘for the little ones’ in Swahili. Wakadogo is a nursery and primary school in a village called Acoyo, 8 kilometers outside of Gulu town in northern Uganda, which was heavily impacted by a 23-year civil war and the atrocities committed by the rebel group, the Lord’s Resistance Army. The school has been open for 10 years, serving over 450 girls and boys each year and we employ 36 people from the local community. In order for every child to enroll and remain in school, we have learnt that a multi-sectoral approach is critical. This means ensuring that a number of children’s needs are met, including their education, health, nutrition, menstrual hygiene, protection, social and financial needs – and we address all of these at Wakadogo. We also have a health center for the school community on the school site in order to ensure that children don’t miss school because of diseases like malaria. Since it opened in 2017, we have treated over 8,000 patients. In addition, we provide quality daily school meals which mean not only better nutrition and health, but also increased achievement in education. Wakadogo is a safe, fun and child-friendly learning environment – we enable this by ensuring our teachers are regularly trained on the latest and best teaching methodologies by international schoolteachers from partnering organizations. We work in partnership with the local community, the sub-country and District leadership, Parent Teacher Association and the Ministry of Education and Sports and the Ministry of Health to ensure sustainable and continued support for the project.
