Mission Statement

Provide programs for at-risk and homeless youth in the Durham Region to prevent homelessness, provide shelter and other opportunities that will support their success and end the stigma of homelessness.

About This Cause

Durham Youth Services (DYS) operates Joanne’s House - the only emergency shelter within the Durham Region focusing specifically on homeless youth between the ages of 16 and 24. Originally launched in April 2008, with 10 beds, DYS has evolved as the needs of youth have evolved. Now with 13 beds, DYS continues to offer comprehensive services including shelter and help with basic needs such as providing meals, clothing, food cupboard, shower and washroom facilities, housing search, school enrollment and transportation to services. As well, DYS helps youth access broader supports as part of comprehensive case management. These include assistance in obtaining benefits, advocacy negotiating the social service system, family re-connection, mental health counselling, and health care services. And for youth ready to take a step towards independent living, we offer continuing support and Transitional Housing programs. In 2019, DYS focused additional efforts on homelessness prevention programs. Our Youth Reconnect Program involves working with the youth to help them access resources in their home community to stabilize their housing situation and develop a strong social safety net, thus avoiding a crisis situation. Our Shelter Diversion program consists of working more intensively with youth to help them resolve their housing crisis. Our vision is to end youth homelessness in the Durham Region.
