Mission Statement
Our mission is to help vulnerable women across the world become financially literate and through empowerment assist them in meeting their most pressing needs. Whether its accessing safe sanitation, setting up small businesses or food security, we have support systems to uplift women in need.
About This Cause
We founded Shanti Life because we care about giving back. We are a not-for-profit organization that brings together a variety of skills and people who care about social entrepreneurship and sustainable living. We want to transfer our skills in entrepreneurship, finance, technology, social work, sustainability and training to people who are vulnerable. We have focused on serving is poor and vulnerable women in India. This is firstly because vulnerable women in poor communities, who do not have access to sanitation, suffer in all aspects of their lives. Women often have to walk miles away from their homes at night so that they can defecate and on these long journeys they face danger including attacks, snake and insect bites. Scared for their safety, many women choose not to eat, resulting in child bearing related illnesses and anemia. We are also serving women in Canada, the USA and UK. Shanti Life provides the donations we receive directly to vulnerable women in the form of a loan. Along with the loan, they will receive a financial literacy training course and a bank account. The women are expected to use the first loan for immediate needs and upon repayment of the loan, we employ a pay-it-forward model and the funds go to another vulnerable woman so she can do the same. Effects from meeting immediate needs such as the purchase of a toilet for women affect entire communities. All of our beneficiaries become role models and benefit from financial empowerment and inclusion for women. After immediate needs are met our beneficiaries will be provided with a new loan to set up her own small business. We encourage the beneficiaries to engage in sustainable businesses where they have experience and there is a need in the community. We provide them with business training, though they would have already taken a loan for a toilet and therefore will have experience in banking.
