Mission Statement
Capital City Mission (CCM) offers a place of welcome, stability, safety and help for those marginalized by society in Lowertown Ottawa through a daily drop-in, community resource navigation, referrals and accompaniment, and spiritual care.
About This Cause
Day-time drop-in, meal program: Our daytime drop-in centre is run Monday to Friday, 9am-1pm. We serve sandwiches, hot drinks, and basic needs to those facing poverty, homelessness, social isolation, addiction, disability, and/or mental illness. Hundreds of people daily rely on our food programs that have been a steady source of support for 23 years. We see between 160 - 180 daily; we serve them a coffee and we greet them by name. We seek to offer a safe place where people can find community. Living with the realities of unstable housing, mental health issues, poverty, and disability of any kind can increase the experience of isolation, so we provide support and encouragement to persons struggling with issues such as these. Community support and advocacy: Our drop-in also facilitates a first point of contact for our clients to access other necessary services. With our clients, there is a significant gap between the supports available and their ability to access them. That’s why we see our community support, tailored to the needs of the individual, as a vital expression of our mission. We refer clients to the other needed health and social services, support and accompany clients as they attend these services, and develop well-being group activities and programs that are facilitated at our drop-in. This support helps people to feel enabled to access the services they need. Spiritual care: Many people have difficult histories with religion. At Capital City Mission we seek to provide a safe place to ask questions and be supported in faith. The main activities of spiritual care are chaplaincy visitation to hospitals, prisons, etc. and a weekly Bible study, but spiritual care takes on many diverse forms throughout the week at the drop-in and beyond.
