Mission Statement

Create opportunities for access and full participation of the African Community in Alberta

About This Cause

Africa Centre is the largest pan-African organization in western provinces of Canada. The organization serves as a hub; providing programs and services from a place of cultural awareness and competency to diverse communities and demographics in Alberta. Africa Centre strives to create opportunities for full access and participation of African Canadians in Alberta in all aspects of society including economic, social, cultural, and educational endeavors, and contributes to the holistic development and wellness of the individual, family and community. Africa Centre’s programs and services are intended to be delivered in collaboration with various cultural heritage organizations and groups, alongside mainstream organizations to ensure that our services reflect a collaborative culture. Alberta’s context has been continually changing; economically, demographically and socially. This transition of socio-economic and demographic changes has had direct and indirect influence on the organization’s programs and services. Following the economic boom in Alberta, African-descent communities have been one of the fastest growing demographics. Along with this population growth was an increase in demand for programs and services. This was followed by economic stagnation and downturn over the past five years that exasperated the delivery of programs and services. During this period, Africa Centre’s program capacity also grew to respond to this increasing demand. However, Africa Centre is largely funded through grants by different orders of the government, charities and individual donors who believe in the mission and the vision of the organization. With Alberta’s economy struggling, these economic realities are expected to have a ripple effect on our revenues which could potentially impact our programs and services. The direct and indirect ramifications of the provincial economic realities will demand a different strategic approach to the organizational funds development, programing and stakeholder engagement. These external realities are taken into consideration to inform the organizational priorities that are presented in this plan for the next five years.
